Girls: Let’s show them how we do it!

Rock or metal bands in Lebanon: do you see a lot of girls in there? Well, honestly, not really! Why is that? Why are most of the bands entirely made up of male figures? Aren’t girls as talented as guys? If you disagree, that would really be sexist! Anyway, let’s face the truth: girls, unfortunately, do not have a dominating presence in bands.

Various bands made entirely of female musicians have emerged the past years in the rock and metal scene. However, their influence, although important, hasn’t reached the levels of some male bands. Is it because the audience is still not used to this “new” concept? Or is it because girls are sometimes categorized into playing some music instruments and not others?

While some mixed bands are made of male as well as female musicians, we rarely see a girl being the lead guitarist of such band, or bassist or even drummer. Why are girls “banned” from these positions? On the contrary, it is very common to see a female vocalist or keyboard player maybe because these positions require special skills such as vocal talent and fluidity of playing the keys, skills apparently found more in female musicians.

But why would guys have the opportunity to be lead guitarists or drummers and not girls?  Well, in rock and metal music, guys appear to be more dominating on stage. They fit well with the ideas of strength and intensity emanating from the music they are playing. But can’t girls show some kind of ferocity in their playing too? Yeah of course! And I’m sure it would please a lot of people to see what female musicians have in their guts! Then, if you’re a girl and are still thinking about playing an instrument, just review your standards! Picking an instrument that seems unusual for girls would definitely owe you success and respect among the rock and metal scene in Lebanon!

I just read this interesting article, and I would like to say that it is not so unlikely to find girl musicians, in fact I have been Lead Guitarist in all the bands I was in. And I do know some amazingly talented girls playing on not-so-much girly instruments. But what we lack is support indeed, whoever we are, and wherever part of lebanon we are from, and we will find that as soon as we stop looking at musicians' faces-names-backgrounds-beliefs and listening to what they are trying to say.

Yes Cynthia, I was actually thinking about your band when I talked about female rock bands in Lebanon; you were the first example that popped into my head. Anyway yeah, I know there are female bands (just by checking the comments it's obvious that there are some, but what I wanted to stress more on was the role of girls in male bands. Just as Paul mentioned there are some bands that are made of both male and female but they still remains rare (Actually my band is exactly just as the one Paul described, we have a female vocalist and I'm the drummer, so it does exist) But I wanted to motivate other girls to take steps and to be more influent in such bands!! Anyway thanks for your precious comments, it's good to know what's happening around there!

15 Gallons Of Beer is a Lebanese rock band consisting of 5 members 2 of them are women, the vocals is a woman and the drummer is one too, it all depends on the mentality and experience of the members.

if you want an example of a all female rock band I have one for you: Indica, from Finland. It's exclusively female. Drummer, bassist, guitarrist, violinist, Singer, keyboardist... here in Europe the Female Metal scene is seen as something natural.

hey it's cynthia maalouf. I used to be the lead guitarist of the lebanese Female classic Rock band Moonlight, and we performed live twice. We covered deep purple, rainbow, led zeppelin songs.. but the band didnt keep up . Now answering to ur question why ?! well i guess it could happen to any normal band such as musical differences, lack of chemistry etc.. but u can't compare lebanon to the USA, Lebanon is a very small country. and yes ure right it is still a more male oriented thing. But that doesn't mean that girls cannot express themselves by playin guitar, bass or drums.

Girls can definitely do a great job on any instrument ,but i think that they tend to express themselves differently ,unless they have a "boyish" mentality. The most simple example is "The Iron Maidens". A great example of female musician playing her way , not the boy's is featured on the first album of "Guilt Machine" ,check it out !
